RIF Top 5: Books Featuring Dragons

RIF Top 5: Books Featuring Dragons

For April, we’re celebrating St George’s Day here at Read Indie Fantasy with some of the books we’ve reviewed starring everyone’s favourite scaly legends, because where would the fantasy genre be without dragons?

So here are our top five books featuring dragons in alphabetical order, some in surprising and unique ways:

Dragon Mage

By ML Spencer

Dragon Mage is the perfect coming-of-age tale for fans of classic fantasy, and features incredibly well written autistic representation in our main character, Aram Raythe. Here is what our guest reviewer had to say about it:

“The world is rich and varied and thereโ€™s so much room to explore and grow.”

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons

By Quenby Olson

If the thought of fighting dragons makes you sad, and you’d rather rear them instead, then this cozy fantasy is for you! This is charmingly British tale of what happens when you inherit a dragon egg in Regency England. Here is what Nils had to say about it:

“This is cozy, low-stakes fantasy, loaded with delightful charm โ€“ and a dragon.”

The Iron Crown

By L. L. MacRae

The world of The Iron Crown is full of dragons that have a direct influence on their environment and the humans living around them, except these dragons are more like spiritual gods that can grant boons, or curses! Read this one if you love classic fantasy and epic journeys with mysteries to unravel.

The Shadow of Black Wings

By James Calbraith

Dragon riders are trained and gathered as the world of Prydain, Qin, and Yamato get into political conflicts. But the nations aren’t the only ones seeking power. Supernatural forces are brewing, hunting for fresh blood and souls to awaken those who should stay dead. Explore mythical Japan, Celtic Britain, and mercantile China in this well-researched alt historical fantasy.

Windward

By S. Kaeth

Windward focuses on a small community of dragons and their riders, and the very close bonds that form between them. It’s classic fantasy for those who love dragon riding stories.

Bonus Book! Dragonmeat

By Angela Boord

I couldn’t resist breaking the rules and including a book that features dragons prominently within its world, but the story here isn’t about riding, rearing, or fighting dragons – but discovering the benefits of eating their delicious meat! Okay, so the story is actually more than that, but there’s definitely a market for stories about dragon burgers.
